27.12.2012 The game went up and down
The Eisbären Berlin took up their performance from the game against the Straubing Tigers and scored the opening goals. But the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg fought back. Berlin won the match by 5-4 in overtime.
André Rankel tipped the puck beneath Wolfsburg´s goalie Sebastian Vogl´s pads at 07:45 of the first period. In his 150 th game for Berlin, Laurin Braun augmented the lead to 2-0 by taking Frank Hördler´s cross the ice pass at the slot area two minutes later (10:39). “It was nice how he converted my pass” said Frank Hördler after the game, adding, “Wolfsburg played very good hockey during the second period and got back into the game unfortunately”.
At the beginning of the second period the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg made the game exciting again. Robert Bina played a tremendous pass to his teammate Kai Hospelt. He started to prepare his stick handling move at the blue line already and converted his break away chance at 01:38. Berlin didn´t become nervous and stuck to their game plan. Mark Katic punished Wolfsburg´s Gregory Moore for his high stick penalty. Berlin´s NHL-star from the Philadelphia Flyers Dany Brière put him in action with a well aimed pass through the crease. Katic renewed the two goal lead standing all alone at the right post (06:37). 59 seconds later the referees called a tripping penalty on Frank Hördler (07:36). His teammates endured the following one man disadvantage situation. Only 4 seconds after Hördler had stepped back onto the ice Mat Dzieduszycki made it a one goal game again (09:40). “We never gave up the game” Wolfsburg´s coach Pavel Gross said. “My team showed a lot of character during the third period. The defense is our biggest problem – and that´s why we lost”.
During a power play situation Dany Brière skated through the offensive zone all by himself at the beginning of the third period. He was looking for somebody to pass the puck to. Suddenly he surprised goalie Sebastian Vogl with a wrister into the far right angle (00:52). Berlin led by 4-2. The guest team pressured hard onto Rob Zepp´s goal from that point on. Berlin´s goalie couldn´t hold onto Sean Blanchard´s hard slap shot from the right crease. Norman Milley made it a one goal game again by pushing the slice over the goal line at 05:20. Wolfsburg got rewarded for their big effort. Christoph Höhenleitner equalized the game at 4 with a quick shot at 15:21. “I have to give credit to Wolfsburg for their big effort to equalize the game” Berlin´s coach Don Jackson showed his respect. “We are still looking for ourselves to finish up a lead. We give up a lead to often – we have to improve that”. During the overtime Danny Brière showed his tremendous hockey skills. He received André Rankel´s cross the ice pass at the left crease. He one timed the pass to finalize the 5-4 scoring. Berlin´s fans rendered their homage by celebrating his name for a long time.
Information on Brière:
It was a scene after the ´Canuck` had scored his first goal. The fans celebrated his name very loudly. “After my first goal I was focused too much in the game to hear the fans shouting my name. I didn´t even realize that. The game went up and down. We were good – we were bad – we were good – we were bad. In the first ten minutes we skated well, but overall there were too many times we didn´t play hard enough. We let them come back twice being up two-nothing and 4-2 – there is no excuse for that”.
